Protests and strikes have always been closely connected to democracy and many say that they have a right to protest. However, there is no constitution or law that grants the right to protest. We do have the right to freedom of assembly, but only if it remains violent less and in order.
In order for protests to be effective, participants need to realize that only if they stay calm, show dignity and remain within the framework of the law, the will be heard, listened too and even respected for what they believe in. Unfortunately though, not all governments respect the right of a peaceful assembly and intervene more often than not with violence to stop the masses.
The best example for a peaceful protest that turned into violent chaos are the on-going rallies and demonstrations in Ukraine. The masses just wanted to be heard but it turned ugly when the government of Ukraine responded with arrests, beatings and useless violence. After a respect less reaction of Ukrainian officials protesters had nothing to loose anymore and started taking control. They fought back, took over government buildings and lost their respect for their regime.
The Ukraine is a war zone now but other nations have realised that, if remaining calm and respectful, protests can be effective. In Hong Kong a professor started the movement called “Occupy Central with Love and Peace”. Thousands of students and more and more members of the community from other social classes are joining in for a peaceful fight for the influence of the public in politics. Hong Kong is ought to be democratic but in reality far from it.
The protests began on September 27 of this year and are still ongoing. I’m very curious to see if everyone (public and government) will be able to keep peace until the end or if it will turn out to be another Ukrainian crisis. What do you think?
12 pm: The midday low – yawn, yawn, yawn
Does the yawning of your colleagues affect you too much? Take it as a compliment on your empathy. Because British researchers came to the conclusion that people who are highly influenced by the yawning of others, have a special ability to empathise with others.
Psychologists of the university in Leeds sent students as subjects with one companion into a waiting room. The companion yawned ten times within ten minutes. The researchers counted how many times the yawning infected the subjects.
Afterwards they tested the degree of empathy of the subjects. The ones that yawned often, scored the highest in the test.
BTW: If you yawned because of reading this, it is a good sign. Scientists found that even just reading or hearing about yawning will make you yawn.
11 am: Looking for help – the right ear is more receptive
If you want your colleague to help you with a annoying task, you better tell him speaking into his right ear. Asking for help in that way will increase your chances being heard, Italien researchers found.
in a field test, researcher of the University of Chieti went to a night club and asked 176 guests for a cigarette. Sometimes the approached people from the right and sometimes from the left. The results showed that the ones that were approached from the right were more willing to give away a cigarette. The reason is the fact that the right ear influences the left brain more intensely and spoken word is processed better.

10 am: Meeting – doodle ’till the doctor comes
The meeting is slow, you doodle away on your notebook, the boss frowns – don’t panic, science is on your side. A British psychologist go so far as to motivating participants of a meeting to doodle, because it improves the concentration.
The scientist of the University of Plymouth tested how many facts 40 participants could remember at the end of a monotone monologue. Those who were drawing doodles could remember 30% more then the ones who just sat there doing nothing but listening.
The reason: Doodling actually prevents you from daydreaming, which occurs naturally when listing to rather uninteresting lectures.

9 am: Breakfast – Warm beverages make generous
Grey and cold starts the new day. What can possibly lure you out of the house. A cup of coffee, say US psychologists and don’t have the caffein-kick in mind, but rather the temperature of the drink. Because apparently having a hot beverage in your hand makes you see your environment in a more positive light.
Scientists of the Colorado University gave 41 participants either a hot steaming coffee or a an iced coffee. Proceeding they were read a story about a fictive person and asked them to judge its character. The persons with the warm beverage associated more positive attributes with the fictive person than the ones that had the cold drink.
In a second test the participants could choose whether they wanted to keep a small reward or give it to a friend. The ones that had a hot beverage tended to be more warmer in their hearts and gave away their reward.
